Fengyan Lin (林丰衍)

I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST, supervised by Prof. Sehi L'Yi. I earned my B.Eng. degree from the School of Software Engineering at South China University of Technology, supervised by Prof. Zikun Deng. My work spans Human-Computer Interaction, Data Visualization, and Human-AI Collaboration.

I am interested in understanding and addressing problems from different perspectives: seeking deeper understanding through rigorous research, materializing ideas through precise engineering, connecting people and technology through empathetic design, and enriching expression through artistic sensibility. I believe that truly valuable systems should not only handle complexity, but also help people understand, reflect on, communicate through, and act on it.

I am also a pianist. I have been playing since the age of three. Alongside my solo work, I remain actively engaged as an accompanist in university settings, including conducting classes and graduation concerts. I am an avid lover of both chamber music and concertos.

In recent years, my artistic focus has centered on the Romantic repertoire, particularly the Ballades, Nocturnes, and Concertos of Chopin. In addition, I perform selected sonatas from across the Classical and Romantic traditions, including Mozart’s K.331, Beethoven’s Op. 90 and Schubert’s D.960, all of which hold particular personal significance in my repertoire.

I stay active through basketball, tennis, swimming, and fitness. I'm also an amateur photographer who enjoys film cameras and drones.
